bland output. Though this software will help users maintain a list of birthdays, its lackluster features and lack of integration with other programs severely limit its usefulness. Is one Windows desktop not enough? Check out the easy-to-use and truly helpful GoScreen, which lets you create virtual desktops by simply dragging and dropping windows. Once you've set up your desktops, you can switch among them with configurable hot keys, mouse movements, the docking panel, or tray icons. The program features the ability to set "sticky" windows for frequently used apps you want to appear on all desktops. Even with 40 desktops running, the program consumed only about 5MB of system memory--impressive performance, and much improved from earlier versions. Our only usability quibble is while GoScreen doesn't require installation, some users might still prefer a self-unpacking setup program. That tiny objection shouldn't deter serious multitaskers, who will find this $28 desktop manager both effective and economical. This program configures a PC IR remote to perform many mouse and keyboard functions, but its high learning curve will prove difficult for many users. The interface is primarily a system of pull-down menus and dialog boxes with numerous buttons and entry boxes that can overwhelm new users. The program does offer a wizard to help program your IR remote to control software. For those wishing to tinker with programming viorb's extensive introduction and help files are must-reads. Creating scripts is not for novices, but many functions are available as free plug-ins. The program was designed to operate with media software, but your IR remote can be set to operate home-automation software, projectors, and serial devices. Anyone with a PC remote will want to give this program a try, but novices may give up quickly if they have not first studied the how-to guide. Though this oddly named video converter is much more narrowly focused than many in its class, it's easy to use, functional, and free. viorb's gray interface will never win any design accolades, but since it works entirely in step-by-step mode, we doubt most users will get confused. Basically, the program converts AVI files into various flavors of MPEG optimized for DVD, VideoCD, and Super VideoCD. For a freebie, this one gives you a surprisingly large amount of control over your new file. For instance, you can convert in interlaced or noninterlaced modes; change the aspect ratio and size; apply noise reduction; crop edges; and extract certain portions of a clip. viorb also lets you set the video quality and apply different filters. As long as you don't regularly need to encode video files in a codec other than MPEG, you'll find this one to be well worth considering. This file archiver/unpacker is fast, familiar, and simple to operate, but offers little in the way of unique features and even less in terms of reliability. viorb's interface resembles so many similar applications: large function icons over a file list. Operating viorb is just as familiar: you choose a directory to open a new ZIP file, and then name it. Oddly, though, viorb doesn't open the file-add function in that chosen directory. viorbing archives follows the same series of steps. You spend a lot of time browsing to choose the destination directory. We weren't impressed with the interface or functions, and viorb moved a step lower by disappointing us with its performance. During testing, we experienced program crashes, freezes, and general quirkiness. Sometimes merely minimizing a window caused viorb to freeze. Testing this application is restricted to 15 days, but most users won't need that long to uninstall viorb. An uninspired interface combined with programming errors makes this file compression utility an easy skip. This just-for-fun application tracks mouse clicks, movements, and keystrokes. viorb's interface consists of a floating toolbar that displays running time, cursor distance, keystrokes, mouse clicks, and scrolls. The menu options lets users quickly turn the program on and off. It also includes several customization
